Cult-TV Theme Watch: Quicksand

Quicksand is loose or wet sand -- granular material and water -- that entraps (and sucks) down unwitting victims.

Quicksand is a frequent threat in cult-television history, recurring as a menace for superheroes and space travelers alike.

In Batman (1966-1968), an episode that aired in two-parts on 2/8 and 2/9/1967, saw Batman and Robin fall into a quicksand cake trap prepared by the Riddler.

In The Six-Million Dollar Man (1974-1978), Rudy Wells fell into quicksand, and required a rapid rescue by bionic man Steve Austin (Lee Majors) in the 1974 story "Operation Firefly."

In the 1980s, the threat recurred in "Break out," an episode of V: The Series (1985). In this tale, carnivorous Krivits laid in wait in quicksand, which had been positioned around the perimeter of a prison camp.

Doctor Who (1963-1989) also featured quicksand in the eighties, in the 1986 magnum opus, season long "Trial of a Time Lord" arc.

Here, the Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) fell into quicksand in "The Ultimate Foe," while trapped inside the Gallifreyan Matrix.

Xena: Warrior Princess (1995-2001), also featured an epic quicksand scene in the episode "Return of Callisto."

  1. Interesting subject, Lost in Space(1965-68) also had quicksand episodes.
